VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM 2021 ON MINES AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), are very excited this year to present the 2021 Mines and Environment Symposium, to be held virtually June 14-16. This symposium, normally held only every three years in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, will discuss current practices in balancing mineral extraction and environmental protection. We believe this virtual event is an opportunity to bring these critical discussions to a much wider audience.
The Symposium is the result of a collaboration between the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique, the Unité de Recherche et de Service en Technologie Minérale (URSTM), and many government actors and mining companies.
The technical program includes four workshops, three keynote speakers - Ward Wilson of University of Alberta, David Blowes of University of Waterloo and Ulrich Mayer of The University of British Columbia - as well as case studies from Newmont Corporation, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, Mine Canadian Malartic, Nouveau Monde Graphite and expert insight on four key themes:
- Waste management
- Restoration of mining sites
- Prediction of the quality and treatment of mining water
- Responsible development and mining innovation
Consult the technical program for more detail.
Presentations will be given in either English or French, as noted in the technical program, and will include translated subtitles. Registrants will be able to consult the recorded technical program on the conference platform until August 16, 2021.
